Children's Librarian

The Oak Park Public Library is seeking a full-time Children’s Services Librarian, and we would like to find candidates who are passionate about public service, have patience and a sense of humor, and who love working with children and their caregivers.

You bring collection expertise, an understanding of child development, an appreciative knowledge of both classic and contemporary children’s literature, storytelling experience, and a desire to surprise and delight the community of Oak Park with your enthusiastic service ethic.

Your interest in applying emerging technologies to Children’s Services matches ours, and your awareness of current library trends and best practices is astute. We work with a wide range of children from birth through tweens and we expect that you have, too. Your interpersonal skills, problem-solving initiative, and effective communication habits are bolstered by self-motivation and a creative can-do spirit. In other words, you are a fantastic Children’s Librarian who is ready to hit the ground running and is eager to tackle new challenges. 

Responsibilities: Assure positive customer experiences by offering excellent reference and readers/media advisory. Perform fun, dynamic storytimes as well as school aged programs in-house and through community outreach; develop and promote a collection, contribute to our tech plans, help plan a popular summer reading program, and build invaluable relationships with youth and their families.

Requirements: MLIS from an ALA accredited school. The 40-hour schedule includes required evening and weekend hours. The starting salary is $41,558.40 annually plus excellent benefits. Minimum work experience: 1 year working directly with children is required.

Sumer Reading Assistant (Temporary)

The Children's Services Department is seeking an enthusiastic, creative, customer service oriented individual to help with our busy Summer Reading Program. Successful candidates must enjoy working with kids, be highly reliable, and possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills. A sense of humor and lots of energy are essential, as well as the ability to provide warm and friendly service to the public.

Responsibilities include playing the Summer Reading game with kids, distributing prizes, keeping statistics, reference desk support, and assisting with programs at all 3 of our library locations.

This is a temporary, part-time position, 30 hours per week beginning May 27 through August 8, and includes evening and weekend rotation. The salary is $12.17 per hour.

The position requires an Associate's degree and a minimum of 1 year experience working directly with kids. Students enrolled in a Library or Primary Education program are preferred.

Digital Services Librarian

The Oak Park Public Library is looking for a people-focused, technology-driven Digital Services Librarian to join the team of the Digital Services Department. The Digital Services Department is composed of a Systems Team and a User Experience (UX) Team, working collaboratively to provide customer-centered technology services.

The Digital Services Librarian will focus on the user experience for the IT component of the department, working with Library staff and customers to close the knowledge and communication gap between users and systems staff, help inform the support and development process, identify “pain points” or obstacles in the use of library technology, and determine teaching opportunities. The Digital Services Librarian will be primarily responsible for training on a wide range of systems for staff, and teaching and coordinating new classes for the public.

The successful candidate will demonstrate a holistic view of Library technology that focuses on the user, technological competence at a higher than average level, the ability to learn new systems and transfer that knowledge to others, experience with teaching groups of various sizes, a curious mind that sees learning as part of the job, the ability to present challenging information and points of view in a non-confrontational manner, enjoy dialogue and collaboration as part of day-to-day workflow, have an outstanding customer service outlook, strong organizational and communication skills, and be an intrinsically motivated self-starter.

This is a full time, 40 hours per week, position with a salary range that begins at $41,558.40 with excellent benefits.
