As one of only four sites across the country chosen to participate, we are excited to be a key part of this national project, sponsored by the American Library Association, the News Literacy Project, and the Open Societies Foundations. Ten local high school students, joined by media experts (from The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, and The Washington Post) and our own librarian talent, will participate from now through November. Students commit two hours each week to learn more about being smarter news consumers, and what resources to use as “media watchdogs” of upcoming political campaign coverage. Scoville Park renovations to begin
On Wednesday, July 18, the Scoville Park Renovation Project begins. The northern portions of the beloved park neighboring our Main Library will be closed to the public – from the Peace Triumphant Monument to Ontario Street. Then, beginning Monday, August 13, the entire park will be closed, with construction fencing around the park’s full perimeter. Renovations should not affect parking in our garage or travel to and from the Main Library. Visit the Park District’s website directly to learn more, get project updates, and view plans.

Recovering from our power outage
Thanks for your patience when we lost power early this month. For safety reasons, we closed our Main Library and we know that affected your entertainment plans, computer access, and air-conditioning needs. Because our automated sorting system went quiet too, we adjusted return times. So items returned July 1 through 3 should not have any fines for the days during our power outage. When power was restored, we checked in 6,886 items on July 3 (that's 536 items per hour). We checked in another 4,337 items on July 5 – almost back to our normal 3,000 items per day! |

Thanks to everyone who cheered us on and sprayed us down during last week’s hottest July 4th parade in recent Oak Park history. Thanks, too, for those of you who voted at the Main Library for your favorite Oak Park “future headline.” In-person voting continues this week at Dole Branch, and next week at Maze Branch.
