"The Sixty-Eight Rooms:" Book Discussion & Diorama Craft
Jack and Ruthie visit the Chicago Art Institute and discover a magic key that makes them gerbil-sized, allowing them to enter the historic worlds of the 68 Thorne Miniature Rooms in the lower level of the museum. (If you have not visited the Thorne Rooms, you will certainly want to after reading this book). Following the discussion, we'll create our own dioramas. For kids going into 4th, 5th, or 6th grade. "Liar and Spy:" Book Discussion & Cipher Wheel Craft
Georges struggles when his dad loses his job, forcing the family to move to an apartment in a new neighborhood. However, he soon makes a new friend named Safer, who happens to be the resident spy extroadinaire. Together, they use their skills of espionage to track a shady tenant who might actually be a murderous criminal! After the discussion, we'll be making cipher wheels to create our own secret messages. "The One and Only Ivan:" Book Discussion & Collage Painting
Based on a true story, this 2013 Newbery Award winner tells the story of Ivan, a gorilla who has spent 27 years housed in a circus-themed mall. See how a talent for finger painting and and enduring friendship changes his life forever. After discussing the book, we'll be creating a painted collage piece to be displayed in the library. 6th Annual Chess Tournament
At the library's fifth annual chess tournament, students in Kindergarten through 12th grade are eligible to compete for trophies for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place. Preregistration at 452-3440 begins July 1st. A side tournament will be held for parents, coaches, and adults (with no registration required).

Earth Day Sculpture-Family Program (Rescheduled)
Chicago artist agitator, Mary Ellen Croteau, will lead us with her wit and wisdom to reconsider our reliance on plastic. We can't always recycle it and it doesn't last forever, so what can we do with it? Join us as she guides families in artfully re-purposing plastic lids into outdoor sculpture for Maze's garden. Registration is required and begins on May 6.
