TEAM DESCRIPTIONS

Book Worms

Wednesdays, June 7-28, 1-3 pm, Main Library

Do you love reading and sharing opinions? Here's your chance to impact the publishing industry. Read books nominated for the 2018 Best Fiction for Young Adults list and practice your public speaking skills. Then, give feedback to a roomful of librarians, authors, and publishers at the American Library Association's annual conference on Saturday, June 24 in downtown Chicago.

Civic Engagement Leaders

Thursdays, June 15-July 27, 3:30 to 5:30 pm, Main Library

Become better informed and prepared to start conversations in your community. Delve deep into civic issues, learn to ask questions, and start conversations. We will focus on three topics important to Oak Parkers: immigration, prisons, and education. Then translate what you learn into a final project, presentation, or work of art.

Drop-ins

Wednesdays, June 14-July 26, 3:30-5 pm, Main Library

Saturdays, June 17-July 22, 10:30 am-12 pm, Main Library

Without committing to a consistent schedule, drop-in when you can to help keep the library functioning, and perform work for the community, too. Organize books, create displays, make crafts, and more. Orientation: Thursday, June 8, 6:30-7:30 pm, Main Library Veterans Room.

Exploring Minds & Matter

Tuesdays, June 13-August 1, 3:30-5:30 pm, Main Library

Show kids why science, technology, engineering, and math are fun! Design and construct experiments and demonstrations like roller coasters for marbles or exploding volcanoes. This team is great for those who want to experiment, explore, and teach; it does not require unique math or science skills. Will not meet Tuesday, July 4.

Rising Reader Mentors

Tuesdays and Thursdays, June 13-July 13, 10:30 am-12:30 pm, Main Library

Tuesdays and Thursdays, June 20-July 13, 10 am-12 pm, Irving Elementary School

Be a mentor and make a lasting difference in someone's life! With the guidance of teachers, help lead small groups of kids in grades 2-5 who need a little extra help with reading, science and math. Training will be held Monday, June 12, from 5-7 pm. Will not meet Tuesday, July 4. Will meet at the same times and locations on Wednesday, July 5.

Stories LIVE

Fridays, June 16-July 28, 1-3 pm, Main Library

Transform picture books, folktales, and more into short plays, raps, or other art forms. Create and practice the piece, then make those stories come alive for kids in the children's department. This team welcomes students in grades 6 and higher.
