The Lives They Lived: "Catherine the Great: Portrait of a Woman"

Tuesday, July 21, 2015 - 7:30pm to 8:30pm

In "Catherine the Great: Portrait of a Woman," Pulitzer Prize-winner Robert Massie tells the story of Catherine II, a German princess from a minor noble family who became the empress of Russia and ruled for 34 years. To escape her unhappy marriage to Peter III, Catherine began to read. "She had been a bright child; her languages then were French and German, [and] she learned Russian," Massie says. "She began to read the great philosophers of the French Enlightenment. And in that way, she developed a philosophy of rule."
