What do I do at the library: Amazingly, people come in and think that we only check out books. That's just the tip of the iceberg. Being on the front line at the customer service desk often involves juggling multiple tasks at once, including assisting our wonderful patrons at the checkout stations; helping with faxes, scanning, and copies; directing newcomers throughout our beautifully massive building; and locating specific items for patrons and placing them aside for future pickups. I also sit down with patrons and straighten out any discrepancies on their accounts to make sure they are free and clear to return to the library as often as possible and recommend us to others.

Most importantly, I build great relationships with those who view us as a valuable resource in their lives, which can be met with no less than a smile every day. This is why working at Oak Park Public Library is automatically the best job I have ever had.

How I turn outward: It's the patrons that make it so easy. It feels good to be knowledgeable and be able to meet those people who have something they need done and just need that boost of assistance to keep them going. It's fulfilling in the utmost to know that you've made someone's day brighter by helping them accomplish a much-needed task, and that they appreciate you for being in the right place at the right time. That is truly the definition of spectacular customer service.

Favorite "hidden library gem": My favorite gem is the staff room. It's such a bright space in the building where you see a random colleague snacking, and it's always good to strike up a conversation, even for a moment. It makes for a great epicenter for communication between departments.

My favorite thing about Oak Park: Well, I was raised here, so there's no one particular thing. The unity is awesome, the education is top-notch, and I feel proud to be part of such a diverse community of great creators!

What I'm watching right now: I am currently catching up on my horror movies. I find some that are okay, but then I find some that make it hard to sleep at night. Movies like Afflicted and Grave Encounters are in my top favorites. I one day hope to be in a movie series myself one day, but until then I will work on publishing my own book of poetry and true stories first.
