Check out a NOOK loaded with multiple ebooks in your interest category beginning September 10, 2012. Fifty new NOOK ereaders will be available to Oak Park Public Library cardholders with popular ebooks selected by library staff. NOOKs will offer nonfiction bestsellers, mysteries, action and intrigue, romance, and titles for kids and teens. Both NOOK Simple Touch and NOOK Color are available. Preloaded content on the NOOK Color includes graphic novels, cookbooks, and picture books for kids and toddlers.

Now, NOOKs can be placed on hold through the library’s SWAN catalog (http://swan.mls.lib.il.us/search [1]) or by calling 708-383-8200. NOOKs will be available at library service desks for pickup, and must be returned to a library staff member at the same desk where it was checked out. To prevent damage, NOOKs should not be returned in book drops. More details available at http://oppl.org/nook [2].

Cardholders will be able to check if a specific title is available on a NOOK using the library’s SWAN catalog (http://swan.mls.lib.il.us/search [1]). The library plans to continually add new content. Cardholders cannot add their own titles to library NOOKs but can request specific titles be purchased at http://oppl.org/collections/make-request [3].

NOOKs can be borrowed for up to three weeks and can be renewed if there is no waiting list. $1 will be charged for each day overdue and actual replacement costs will be charged for any parts lost or damaged. NOOKs borrowed from the library come with a case, power cord and adaptor, and instruction card.

Oak Park Public Library will provide support for cardholders who check out the new NOOKs. “We're very excited about this new collection,” states Bleue Benton, Manager of Collection Development. “You can check out a NOOK with Oak Park authors featured on it! It’s a terrific way to sample these authors.”

“We’re always exploring new ways to bring more digital tools into our community,” notes Deirdre Brennan, Executive Director. “Barnes & Noble has created a special partnership with libraries that enables us to circulate NOOKs. Bringing Oak Park a hands-on trial with this ereader is our latest success.”

The new NOOKs are available only to Oak Park Public Library cardholders. More than 20 other libraries in the SWAN consortium have NOOKs available for their cardholders.
