Teen Summer Volunteer Program

Teens in the summer volunteer program

The teen summer volunteer program is now over. Here's an overview of what we did in 2014.

Do you love reading and sharing opinions? Discover new novels and explore different genres with us. Discuss titles you love (or hate!) and make video book trailers to recommend good reads to the world.

  • Weekly on Mondays, 3-5 pm
  • Main Library

Stop by during drop-in hours and help keep the library functioning. Organize books, create displays, nd make crafts without committing to a consistent schedule. Members of any team can also join us and earn extra hours.

  • Weekly on Wednesdays, 3:30-5 pm and/or Saturdays, 10:30 am-noon
  • Main Library

Green Thumbs

Don't mind a little dirt under your nails? Experience the joy of helping plants grow. Learn about urban greening and take field trips to get to the root of things in Oak Park.
  • Weekly on Tuesdays, 10 am- noon
  • Main Library

Mad Scientists

Plan experiments and science demonstrations to show kids how fun science can be. We will be walking to nearby parks to do the experiments outside. Team members need to have enthusiasm for science and math activities. This is an excellent team for teens who like to work with kids, who like messy and fun experiments (and don't mind cleaning up), and who think science is cool.
  • Weekly on Fridays, 3-6 pm (excluding July 4)
  • Main Library

Rising Reader Mentors

Be a mentor and make a lasting difference in someone's life! Help a teacher leading a small group of kids in grades 3-5 who need a little extra help with reading, science and math. Plus, get trained to work as a tutor and earn hours towards professional certification.
  • Weekly on Wednesdays, June 11-July 16, 10 am-12 pm
  • Training at Main Library on June 3 and 4, 10 am-3 pm
  • Main Library or Dole or Maze branches

Tech Gurus

Are you comfortable helping someone set up an email account, format a resume, transfer photos, or set up new equipment? Put your tech savvy abilities to use, gain customer service skills, and get familiar with the library’s digital collections. Team members will provide one-on-one tech help to library customers.
  • Weekly on Wednesdays, 5-7 pm, with opportunities for additional individual times
  • Main Library

Tinker Team

Geek out and make something awesome. Join us for an adventure in learning basic electronics and programming, and create fun, interactive Arduino projects.
  • Daily, July 21-July 25, 10 am-2 pm
  • Main Library

Yarn Spinners

Join experts to help people in need by creating basic supplies. Learn to crochet or learn new techniques, then make sleeping mats, blankets, scarves and more to donate to local charities.
  • Weekly on Thursdays, 2-4 pm; training Tuesday, June 10 and Wednesday, June 11, 2-4 pm
  • Dole branch

Volunteer Opportunities for Kids in Grades 5-7

Junior Librarians

Help the Children's Department with the summer reading program, "Fizz, Boom, Read", assist with fun book and craft programs, write book reviews, decorate the library, and learn about the many things librarians do. This is a team for responsible tweens who are enthusiastic, like working with kids, enjoy arts and crafts, and are willing to try new things.
  • An Oak Park Public Library card is required
  • Kids entering grades 5, 6 or 7 can apply online or at Main Library starting May 1
  • Weekly on Mondays OR Thursdays, June 16 through July 24, 3:30-5 pm
  • Main Library
