Better Lake Street, the Village of Oak Park’s nearly year-long improvement project to renew, reconstruct, and resurface a primary thoroughfare near the Main Library, began March 2. It promises new concrete and asphalt roadway surfaces, replacement and restoration of water and sewer mains nearing the end of their useful service lives, and new streetscapes.
MARCH 6 UPDATE: Stage 1 work to remove and replace sewers and utilities on Lake Street between Oak Park Avenue and Euclid Avenue. Good weather allowed crews to work quickly and safely. A westbound traffic lane on Lake Street will remain open in the work zone, with a detour for eastbound traffic at Oak Park Avenue. Work on sewers and utilities is scheduled for completion in May.

Access to the Main Library
Specific to the Main Library and its 834 Lake St. address, here’s what we have learned from the Village:
- Pedestrian and moving vehicle traffic will not be restricted directly in front of the Main Library, yet drivers may often be restricted to one lane being open at a time.
- If Main Library parking garage access would need to be restricted, it would be for hours, not all day or days.
- In April and May, construction at the intersection of Lake Street and Oak Park Avenue will require that intersection be closed periodically and traffic rerouted.
- Later this year, construction on Lake Street between Forest and Harlem will require that portion of Lake Street be closed for weeks, and traffic rerouted.
