Socktober: Small act, big difference

Did you know socks are consistently among the most requested items at homeless shelters? All October, we’re collecting new pairs at all library locations to benefit the clients of Housing Forward and other organizations.

It’s our second year participating in Socktober, an international, monthlong sock drive inspired by Kid President. In 2016, thanks to the generosity of our community, we collected 417 pairs of socks for Housing Forward, plus a box full of bags, underwear, and toiletries.

“I’m so proud of our community and how much love was shown last year,” said Elementary School Services Librarian Genevieve Grove. “It was really great to hear caregivers talking to kids about how we can help take care of each other, and to hear kids reminding their grown-ups that they needed to put more socks on the shopping list.”

Inside each library location, we’ll have drop-off boxes for sock donation collection during open hours, from October 1 through 31.

At the Main Library, the drop-off box is located in the first-floor Children’s Services area, next to the service desk.
