Announcing our newest pop-up library location: Kids Unlimited Therapy Services, 820 North Blvd., Oak Park!
Pop-up libraries allow community members to use the library when they’re out and about, no library card or checkouts needed.
Kids Unlimited is our fourth pop-up library location, adding to ones installed in 2024 at the Community Recreation Center, Wonder Works, and Styles 4 Kidz. Kids and families visiting Kids Unlimited can now read library books while there for occupational therapy, physical therapy, and speech/language pathology appointments.
What’s on the shelf
Based on feedback from Kids Unlimited staff, we stocked the pop-up library shelf with books featuring characters with diverse backgrounds and abilities. These include Ten Ways to Hear Snow, Song in the City, Stuntboy, in the Meantime, and Black Girl You Are Atlas.
“I know I’ve used many of the books in my sessions with children already,” said speech/language pathologist Katherine Staub, CCC-SLP. “I used Weird But True with a kindergartner who loves trivia and facts. Anytime we saw a word with /r/ in it we practiced saying his /r/ sound.”
“I have another kiddo that I see who doesn’t use verbal words very often but loved repeating after me for the singsong parts of the book Song in the City,” she added. “And I used Winter Light with a 4-year-old to teach early literacy skills.”
‘Literacy is for everyone’
“The selection of books you’ve provided so far has been wonderful,” Staub told us. “I know we wanted to partner with the library at Kids Unlimited because we value our local library and the education and community connection it provides. Literacy is for everyone, and by having a pop-up library we’re providing access to books and letting everyone know that we love reading and language!”
